This thread can't get anymore simpler. I'll start.

Iced Earth - I have been a fan of Iced Earth for about 3 years now, and since then I have listened to them alot. My favourite album from Iced Earth has got to be 'Something Wicked This Way Comes', the whole album is just epic, especially the ending where we hear the start of a story in which the band got around to finishing about 10 years later.

Hunters and Collectors - I have gotten into Hunters and Collectors just recently, and their music just amazes me. I can't put my finger on it as to why I like these guys so much. There is something unique about the vocals. I recommend you guys listen to Holy Grail, it is a great song off a great band. I haven't gotten a chance to listen to some of their albums, but I am amazed at this band.

THE LIVING END

Ok, this is my all time favourite band. No arguments here, they have been my favourite band for about 4 years. I love every single one of their songs without question. I think their music is just hypnotic to me. There is something about their music I can't get enough of. All I can say is that Chris Cheney is a genius, and he is my idol.

I recommend all of their albums, but in particular Modern Artillery. The rockin' short and sweet opener of What Would You Do gets me listening and the closing epic song of The Room makes me chant the epic chorus.

The Antlers - My all time favorite band ever. They're a new band, releasing their first LP in 2009. It's a concept about tragedy striking one man and it beautifully put together. The falsetto vocals an use of instrumentation convey deep feelings. It's really a tear jerker, so concept-wise it's probably the best I've ever heard. Musically, it's nearly one of the best. Sometimes it borders on a little repetitive, but it does convey the tragedy well and I've been through this album over 50 times. It got Pitchfork's #37 on the top 50 albums this year.

They've released three EPs before Hospice. Their EP, In the Attic of the Universe, is almost as good. It's got the same feel to the music, though with a little less lyrical depth.

Wintersun - Probably my favorite metal band. Again, a band with a single album, but it's genius. The album is a product of Jari Mäenpää, and ex-Ensiferum member. It combines all genres of metal for a complex, fast while melodic feel. I find it to be truly a work of genius, and almost every instrument (guitar, bass, keyboard, and vocals) is performed by Jari himself while he had his friend record the drum tracks. I absolultely cannot wait for Time, his next album, which should be out soon, but has been delayed over 3 years.

Dragonforce - Yeah, everyone's heard of them, and most people here seem to dislike them musically unless they're under the age of 13, but we'll call it a guilty pleasure (even if I don't feel guilty). Sometimes I just need to go for power metal, and Dragonforce is usually my choice. I don't care who complains about them speeding up their music, or having no skill, etc... etc... The fact is that I like their recorded songs and I'll listen to them occasionally.

Buckethead - As far as guitar solosists go, no one can beat Buckethead. I have everyone from Yngwie, to Vai, to Howe, to Rizzo, all ranges of guitar shredding capabilities, but no one touches Buckethead. I think the variety in his music does it, as my favorite album is probably Electric Tears overall, but I think my favorite song is Soothsayer. It's just melodic how he mixes his music and can completely touch me on emotional levels that music has never breached before.

Cacophony - Oh why weren't you a success? I know they've gained kind of a cult following, and are kind of popular now, but back around the 80s they didn't really make any money, so two albums is all we got. It's the band with Marty Friedman and Jason Becker dual shred guitaring. Intense. They intertwine the guitars so perfectly, and every song is a masterpiece. I really wish they had more material to pick from, but between Becker's disease and they band not really being self sufficient... what can you do?

Notable/Honorable Mentions:
Animal Collective
Bon Iver (thanks eyewin)
Sunset Rubdown
Volcano Choir
The XX
Phoenix
Dirty Projectors

Green Day - My favorite band, hands down. I personally own Dookie, International Superhits, Kerplunk, American Idiot, and 21st Century Breakdown (first day it came out btw). My dad is a big GD fan he got me into them. From their older Punk songs, to their average Rock songs, to their Alternative songs, to the acoustics, Green Day is one kick-ass band.

My top 10:

1. Between the Buried and Me - This band is too good for words, and their music can speak for them perfectly. BTBAM is a very well-known progressive metal (If you can even call them that genre) on scorehero. I've been listening to them since 2004, just about the time they got their new band members. The reason they are #1 on my top 10 is because of the album Colors alone. This album is an over 1 hour long concept album that's all one song throughout. To me, this band sounds like they make the transitions of their songs first, and then build the sections around the transitions, but they are so perfect throughout the entire album. It's such a unique, and creative masterpiece, it makes it no surprise to bring the band up to #1. I own all of their albums.

2. The Human Abstract - Another progressive metal band. I started listening to them only months after their first album was released. For 3 years, this band was #1 on my top 10, as Nocturne was a very great metal album. The lead guitarist took classical and metal music and spliced them together flawlessly. Some of the solos on the album, such as Mea Culpa and Nocturne, are truly outstanding. Their 2nd album, Midheaven, was not as great, considering the lead guitarist left the band. With the success of Colors with BTBAM, and the mediocrity of Midheaven, this band fell one notch down. However, the lead guitarist is back with the band, just to help them record their next album. Hopefully, we'll see some old THA again with their next release. I own both of their two albums.

3. Protest the Hero - PTH is another amazing progressive metal group. The reason they are so high on my list is because of the talent each member holds. The vocalist is especially talented. He has an amazing vocal range, singing and screaming. Did I mention he has one of the best screams I've ever heard? The rest of the band is very good with their instruments, making them in an incredible technical band. I own both of their albums, Kezia and Fortress.

4. Piebald - I've been a fan of Piebald since I was 10 years old, so of course there's a lot of nostalgia involved in them being on my top 10 forever. A band that started hardcore in 94, and eventually became a very awesome alternative rock group, this is by far my most listened band all-time. I have everyone of their albums starting with If Life Hands to Lemons all the way to Accidental Gentlemen. They broke up in 2007, which really killed me for a bit.

5. Animals As Leaders - I found out about this band by a scorehero member who is in Rhythm Authors with me. An instrument metal band, their S/T album that came out recently was written all by one man, who is incredibly skilled. All the songs having very odd time signatures, some even down to x/16 and even x/32. The songs all have some of the most awesome guitar riffs I've ever heard, and a lot of the stuff would be even better with some vocals.

6. Cave In

7. Fall of Troy

8. Chiodos

9. The Number Twelve Looks Like You

10. The Bled

I'll fill in the next 5 bands later.

If you like Kezia and Fortress, get A Calculated Use of Sound (one of their EPs). It's pretty sweet.

I really like the band Overhead, but I only have one of their songs. I've been looking all over for the albums, but I can't use amazon (no credit card) the albums aren't on iTunes, and I can't find them ANYWHERE online to download. So check them out, and if any one finds the albums available somewhere (legal of course) please tell me.

I also thoroughly enjoy Coheed and Cambria, Dream Theater, Yes, Beardfish, Porcupine Tree, Between the Buried and Me, and several other prog bands like that.

I must be one of the contrast people around here.

Not in any particular order:
Pendulum - The kings of the Drum 'n' Bass world. A little more progressive than most DnB, and usually contains the more melody than other musicians in the same field which makes it catchy.

Quantic - Definitely the king of the Electronica/Trip-hop (of sorts). No one else is as consistently good as he is, and he even does most of his music from his bedroom. I guess that isn't that impressive now that I think about it, but it's a cool fact. He even gets into a lot of Latin style which is fairly unique.

Boards of Canada - This duo definitely tops my books of the Electronica world that deal more with effects than instruments. They are also consistently great which is fairly uncommon.

As for something I guess more people here can relate to:
Mastodon - I've been keeping track of these guys since Leviathan first hit the streets. One of the only bands that continually gets better. Hopefully this quality won't run out any time soon. Their latest album Crack the Skye I didn't feel topped Blood Mountain, but over time it has really grown on me and is easily my favorite.

Collective Soul
Dream Theater
Linkin Park
Live
The Offspring
Pink Floyd
Shinedown

Nothing too exotic there, except arguably DMT.

It sort of varies depending on mood. Buuuuut these are pretty much constant:

Silver Sun (British power-pop band from the 90s, a bit like Weezer, not fucking Namestealer Pickups)
Lagwagon
Sonic Youth
The Beatles
The New Pornographers
Mono
Radiohead

...actually, y'know what: this is a pretty good summary:
http://www.last.fm/user/thecaptainof/charts?rangetype=overall&subtype=artists

EDIT: derp, included Lagwagon twice.

1. Queen. I like classic rock more than any other rock genre and when it comes down to it, no one beats Queen. They can play both the light (Bohemian Rhapsody, Save Me) and the heavy (Stone Cold Crazy, One Vision) and everything in between. Freddie Mercury is the best singer in rock music and Brian May's guitar playing is great, and all four of them can sing great harmonies.

2. The Who. This band is great and comes in a close second. I own a DVD of them playing live and they have so much energy on stage. Rodger's voice fits the band so well. Pete was exceptional on the guitar, revolutionized the way guitar players play on stage, and wrote so many great songs for the band. Keith Moon's drumming cannot be matched by anyone. John's playing was unlike anyone at the time. For example, at the time, there was not really such a thing as a bass solo, then My Generation came out. If you need more proof of John's bass playing, watch this.

Edit: to the OP, it would be good if you could do a list of Scorehero's favorite bands like the album suggestion thread.

Metallica-arguably one of my favorite bands...their music just pumps me up!

The Police-I saw them in concert in 2007 and really got into their music...so why not

Michael Buble-zomg something not metal, classic rock, death metal, etc....Michael Buble is a class act...i've seen him in concert and he puts on a great show...gotta love it.

Queen-I think Queen was the very first band I probably ever listened to when my mom would play it in the car. I was probably about 6 and it was truly amazing. I thought Bohemian Rhapsody was one of the greatest songs ever.

Billy Joel-Another classic. Actually, it's a tie between Queen and Billy Joel between the very first artist I listened to. Just love his music, nothing else to say.

Harry Chapin-Honestly, I don't know a whole ton of Chapin, but of the songs I've heard, he is truly amazing.

Linked are my favorite songs by that particular artist. As you can see from my selections, vocals are important to me. Not lyrics, but good, fun, interesting, entertaining vocals. If I can't belt it out while driving, I may not like the song/band/artist as much.

My Top Ten:

1. Shinedown - I love absolutely everything this band produces. I just can't describe it. The power behind Brent's voice is just undeniably awesome. Amazing lyrics and music, I haven't heard a song by them I didn't love. I was lucky enough to see them in concert, and it was an amazing show - they are very talented performers and they really know how to pump up the crowd.

2. The Beatles - I love the Beatles, I've grown up with dad playing the Beatles day in and day out. The Beatles Rock Band is my favorite setlist ever made, it is just a great shame that the colors and Rock Band engine makes it unplayable for me (my vision is terrible). This holiday I went to see The Eggmen in concert (local Beatles tribute band) and WOW was it amazing. I'll always be a Beatles fan.

3. Avenged Sevenfold - I was lucky enough to see both Shinedown and A7X in the same concert last year. Amazing show, lots of fun. I love the mixture of screaming and singing, since I've discovered I really like metal when there is some good, passionate vocals along with it. None of the growling unintelligible stuff. My favorite songs are Unholy Confessions, Bat Country, Afterlife, Critical Acclaim, Scream, and of course ALPoH (linked above). I was disappointed they didn't play this live, but I still really like this band. They pump me up, definitely. A lot of fun to sing and of course great fun on all instruments in rhythm games.

4. System of a Down - This band has such a weird sound, but I really like them. I can't describe why, I just do. Same deal with A7X, some screamy/shouty vocals, but some good harmony and singing and a lot of fun guitar/bass/drum work. Chop Suey, Toxicity and almost all of the Mezmerize album is my favorite.

5. Boston - Classic. More fantastic vocals, feel good music. I can't get enough of it.

6. Queen - See Boston. My dad probably played these bands more than any other in my childhood.

7. Metallica - I'll be honest, I never really knew much of or even liked Metallica before the game. I knew of Sad But True, that song has been on my computer/iPod for years. But I fell in love with each song in the game sans Kill 'Em All. I really love the vocal work done in later albums (unlike most Metallica fans who hate everything now). No Leaf Clover being one of my favorite ever, I really think James Hetfield doesn't get enough credit as actually being a pretty good singer. Sure it's not comparable to Boston or Queen, but its just good old-fashioned gritty vocals. I think it'd be a hell of a treat to see them live.

8. Muse - Only recently got into them. But you know what I'm going to say here: Vocals, awesome vocals, infectious tunes/beats just all around really cool. What is their genre anyway? Besides being awesome.

9. TobyMac - I bet you haven't heard of this guy. That's because he's *gasp* a Christian artist. Not just Christian, but *gasp* hip-hop/rap. Granted, his initial style was more rock and pop. He had some heavier stuff in the past, and now his latest album is pretty pop. Basically, this guy has experimented in all genres and styles, so you can't bash him for any one thing. His Christian messages are not subtle, so if that bothers you then you're missing out on some really good music. If I had never gotten into Guitar Hero, Toby would still be my #1. Momentum was my first album that I ever bought with my own money, and before he went solo I was also in love with his old band, dc Talk.

10. Gorillaz - Only recently did I start to love the Gorillaz and get their albums. I love the style that's constantly changing. It's unpredictable and I know I'm going to love it when I hear it. I guess put this under the "Guilty Pleasure" category.

Narrowing it down to a top ten was HARD!

Honorable Mentions:
Within Temptation, Weezer, Asleep at the Wheel, Casting Crowns, Hawk Nelson, Silversun Pickups, Shaimus, Interpol, Josh Groban, Maroon 5, Michael Buble.

What can I say? My musical taste varies. Metal, Hip-Hop, Alternative, Classic Rock, Indie Rock, Jazz, Country, Pop... Opera?!

I don't know that there's anything on that list you could actually call "Metal". You could argue A7X or Metallica (Early Metallica is Thrash) but they're more hard rock / pop rock now.

You should honestly try branching out your tastes a bit more. Every band/artist you name is extremely mainstream. With your wide taste in music, you could find some real hidden gems out there. A lot of people have good recommendations all over this music forum now. I could try to recommend some bands you'd like based on your favorites, but with your wide taste, it seems as though you could probably sample anything and like it, I just don't know what your favorites would be.

Music really has a whole world out there, it'd be a shame to limit yourself only to artists who get radio play and are extremely popular.

Haha, I figured someone would pull the whole "thatz not reel metal!!!" thing upon my listening to Metallica and A7X. I don't know and I don't care about genres, so let's not go there. If I like it, I listen to it. I don't think its that I need to "broaden my tastes," but rather just "listen to more artists of those same tastes." The artists I listen to are just fine, regardless of their popularity (I generally hate the notion that when a band becomes popular they become bad).

I don't doubt that there are many hidden gems out there that I would like, but what is so wrong with having my list being mainstream? If you can recommend something I'll check them out. But you act like mainstream tastes is such a bad thing. I have a LOT of other bands I like, probably "mainstream," I don't know really, but I couldn't even begin to list them all.

As far as recommendations... my whole thing is just good-sounding vocals. If you're going to recommend artists with screamy and/or terrible vocals then I'll stop you right now. Metal isn't off limits; I like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest and such alright, is that br00tal enough to be metal? ;) I just only like screaming in context, and as mentioned before, very good singing. Whatcha got?

Edit: Take this bit to PM, or I'll do some searching on my own. But I don't want to derail this thread further. <3
