I was pretty shocked to hear that this had happened last night. I'm personally for gay marriage and very happy that my state approves of equality. What are your opinions on gay marriage and do you feel that this will be a gateway for more states to legalize it? _________________

Good for them.
I don't really have an opinion, because I don't really care all that much. It won't affect my life one way or the other, though I guess if it reduces bigotry towards homosexuality, it's a good thing. _________________

Very glad this happened. I'm all for legalization of gay marriage. Let people do what makes them happy.
That being said, it would be nice if it were introduced in other states with high GLBT populations, like California (lolProp8) and Minnesota. _________________

This is pretty much how I feel... there are people who are still holding onto their religious or political reason for why gay marriage is "wrong" and they'll look just downright silly in 20-30 years when all of this is passed (because at this point it's just a matter of time). Give it up, you know? It's just a matter of human rights... and your personal beliefs shouldn't stand in the way of another person's rights. It's embarrassing it's taking us this long in the first place...
It's merely waiting for the older generations to die off or change their mind (but then we'll just have to deal with their brainwashed children... urgh). Unfortunately I live in Texas, so it will be a while yet before we see it here (if ever). But I also live in Austin, which might as well be it's own state in the middle of Texas as far as politics, so it's at least bearable. :P _________________

Yay .
I used to not really care / not be for gay marriage, but after spending my first year at college surrounded by LGBT members, my opinions have definitely changed. One of my best friends is gay, and we went to the same college. He joined up with the LGBT group there, so I kinda tagged along and got to immerse myself in their lifestyle and see things through their perspective and whatnot.
It was loads of fun, and I've met some really good friends through the experience. It was also a nice way to learn about acceptance and diversity and how prejudices still exist today ( I feel like I'm writing a paper for school now ). I'm actually going to meet up with a lot of my friends tomorrow since I'm attending the Chicago Gay Pride Parade. This news will certainly be worth a lot of celebration .
I do hope that eventually gay marriage gets legalized throughout the country and they get the same rights as everybody else does, ALWAYS. Not just in certain cases, places, times. _________________

It's always impressive how just meeting actual gay people and having gay associates can really make these sorts of political issues resonate more strongly. "I support gay marriage as an intellectual exercise" is excellent, but a little cerebral; "I support gay marriage because a lack of it is totally fucking over this person I know" really makes it hit home.
I mean, I have an acquaintance Gene whom I follow on Twitter. Judging from his feed, Gene is a totally normal guy: he kvetches about property taxes, enjoys dippy cat videos on YouTube, bitches about the weather, is miffed when he gets the cold shoulder from people in bars, rolls his eyes at the ineptitude of local motorists - all stuff I can relate to. Gene also happens to be gay. Which has made these sorts of political things more tangible, y'know? Where stories like "the [state name] assembly banned gay marriage" read as "the [state name] assembly decided that, for no discernible reason, your friend Gene should be treated as a lesser class of person". Which is more galling, obviously. What did Gene ever do to you people?

The overarching sentiment, as I have seen it graphically expressed from time to time:
I regret that we can't just trade for Austin straight-up for some equally out-of-tune city stuck in California, like Sacramento or something. Pretty sure all parties involved would be much happier at the end of that process. _________________

To be completely serious, though, it's about time. Since I don't wanna go grab another quote, I'll just say I agree with Hailz. The fact that it's still an ongoing struggle at all is embarrassing, to say the least. Then again, as encouraging of a thought it is to say that it's only a matter of time before the rest of the states follow suit, I'd only say that loosely. I mean...New York's a pretty damn liberal state, and that bill passed by...what, four votes? There's always hoping that the passage of this bill has influence on congressmen from other states, but people against this kind of thing are bull-headed as fuck. Here's hoping, though. _________________

This is universally spot-on. It's amazing how more intimately knowing people of a certain group (race, sexuality, what have you) - and knowing their stories - can make you change your mind about them and potentially their entire group in a heartbeat. It's sad how debilitating ungrounded stereotypes can be. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing", as they say. Get to know people, and your opinion WILL change. _________________

Next year actually, Minnesota's going to have a vote on an amendment to the Minnesota Constitution during election 2012 that asks if marriage is defined as being between one man and one woman. Can't wait to see how that goes, considering how messed up MN politics are already. |

Michele Bachmann and her little minions are batshit crazy.
Despite being a heterosexual male, I have been following this all week. I was extremely excited when it passed.
Everyone deserves the same rights under the 14th amendment, plus, it's a natural right for all humans. The Catholic Church really has no moral authority anymore (for obvious reasons) and they should not be influencing our legislation.
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;"
With this act passed, and his extremely high approval ratings, I think Cuomo can make a run for president in 2016. Hell, 59% of Republicans in his state say he's doing a great job.
CUOMO 2016. |

This is the part where I start the slow clapping that builds up to a very generous round of applause. This is great news. _________________

I didn't know the guy from Weezer was going to run
this is extremely good news as well! I hope the rest of the US can pick up on this as quickly.
Also stewo: It's not just the catholic church but hardcore fundies. Then again I know a few Christians who don't mind gays having rights so it's a bit of a line there. _________________

Tell me about it Dumbass frenchies said "lolnoway" not even two weeks ago.
Still wOOt I never used to be really convinced that marriage was better than no marriage, but the most important thing is having the same rights. So it just makes sense that it's finally happening !
A long way to go (only 6th state, damn), BUT let's be happy. I heard it on the news today, and apparently it'll be one of the first thing that will happen next year if a socialist is to become president in my damn country. Knowing how the most racist party is getting bigger in here, I'm not sure if it'll ever happen though. Sad part : religion isn't even involved in anything here, and they STILL fail badly.
EDIT : you people are so damn right !! If it's not legal everywhere yet, it's mostly because people think/assume/know nothing. When they know you personally, they're like ... REALIZING (like it has to be realized) that you're just like everyone else and it wouldn't change anything at all for them. Sadly, years and years ago, back when I was starting to put 2 and 2 together, I heard my mom saying she was against. My dad and grandma don't need to say it for me to know that. Wow, reaching new depths in terms of disappointment |

As a gay individual myself, I am happy for this. It's good to see that this whole situation is making progress.
I'm surprised that this issue is that much of a big deal anyway. Even if I was straight, I still would think that love is love. It's a violation of human rights to restrict it. _________________
