I think this would be the place to put this, considering it doesn't specifically pertain to software.

An issue I've run into twice with the recovery thread I run and in general is whether these charts are allowed. For instance, Mr. BlueTornado asked for Fear of the Dark, when Fear of the Dark (Live) is in Rock Band. I erred on the side of caution and dismissed it, but are live and unlive (...? what do you call it? >__>) songs considered different enough not to conflict with the rule?

I doubt it. They're still the same song, and even if the live version is different, the charts should be similar, so it should be forbidden.

I don't do customs so I can't comment on that, but I would call the non-live version the "studio" version

That...that's true.

@ ThunderAlex, I fugre that's the case but I'll wait for JCirri or one of the custom mods.

I've reported a good number of charts that are already in games, and every live version I've reported where the studio version is in the game or vice versa has been removed, so I'd say it's okay.

(unless my memory is terribly off...) We've decided to err on the side of caution. Live and studio are considered the same for purposes of whether to allow the charts of one to be posted when the other is in the game. So e.g. no, you wouldn't be allowed to post Fear of the Dark when Fear of the Dark (Live) is in Rock Band.

Why aren't songs already in games allowed? Is it some sort of legal issue?

Sort of, they don't want to compete with the official games.

Basically, they don't want someone in the situation of: "Hmm I could buy GH:Metallica or just make a custom disc of all the songs on it.

This. SH has good relationships with the developers, they do not want to steal their business.

And I guess this is relevant, but what about charting covers? Let's say you wanted to chart Trivium's cover of Master of Puppets. Would that be allowed? Also, what if said cover is quite different than the original? What if you wanted to chart a non-Aerosmith version of Tran Kept a' Rollin'? Is that legal?

That's fine as long as the artist interprets it fairly differently than the actual song. For instance, random kid A covers Blinded By Fear in his room. You probably can't do that unless he fundamentally changed the song (which an impressively small amount of YouTube covers do).

However, I think that this one would be fine.
