For the top scorers, FCers, talented GH players... are you guys good at math? It seems to me that people who understand math can read and interpret patterns better than people who aren't good at math. So with that being said, it might be possible there's a link between those who can comprehend the patterns and random charts that GH presents, making it easier for certain players to score high or even FC songs. Your opinion? _________________

I have no idea if there's a direct correlation, but I will mention that I'm a physics major in college. I'm interested in reading the other answers you get. _________________

if this is true then that little guy Ben (the 9 year old) is better at maths than the majority of people on these boards, including myself _________________

It also would go in hand with the general idea that musicians are also good at math.
I'm currently a computer science major w/ a heavy math and physics emphasis (simulation type stuff), so... |

I'm a math major, and I can identify patterns and such easily. But this is not true for all people who are good at math, though most can. I can say that most of the time when I'm playing I can pick out the different patterns of a song. So I would say that yes, to some degree there is a connection, but you also have to have the rhythm to keep the pattern going as well. _________________

I think people that play instruments have more of an advantage at the game, but I'm a piano-playing math major, so I'm not really the one to set this straight. _________________

Well, define "good"...
I took Calculus AB and BC in high school and got 5's on both of the AP tests. But apart from minimal coursework that was required in college I never took any more math after that - it's not my least favorite subject but I don't like it that much either. _________________

i think it has less to do being good at math and more to do with being good at identifying patterns, whatever subject area that relates to and whatever part of the brain that is (get a psychologist on that one i have no clue).....some of my fellow physics and math majors are horrid at this game, but some of my liberal arts, english, blah blah majors are great.....i think it just has more to do with being able to recognize the pattern on the screen (such as the zig zags) instead of just seeing a bunch of colors on the screen _________________

okay well lets put it this way... im the top in my trig class and have been since the start of the semester
i havent owned a GH game until GH3 came out and i quickly beat expert mode... the only times i had previously played it were at my friend's house for prolly only a few hour every couple weeks or whenever i go to his house. he played on expert mode and i quickly became better than him and i ended up beating free bird the night b4 GH3 came out
sure im not the greatest player... but im actually better at the guitar solos and HOPOs than i am at the repetative parts/chords of songs... like i can beat mosh 1 on expert and stay in green then fail on the section afterwards.
so its really up for you to decide... because its either math related... or it is because video games come natural to me... and they always have |

There is somehow a link between Music and Math.
Like one comes naturally if you are good at the other.
FOR INSTANCE: If you want your kid to be good at math, let them listen to music early on.
I actually tutor math at a college and im 15 so i think there might be a connection... |

Just reading some generally information on these threads, I learn how the numbers of the scoring work really well especially with squeezing. For example if you miss a squeeze which would have gotten you 1 more note (not a chord) while under SP (with 8x multiplier rather than 4x) you would get an additional 200 points for hitting that note. _________________

the math part of my IQ is in the top 99.9% of the world. im not very good at gh. math doesn't help you much if at all at guitar hero, and playing a musical instrument, including guitar, does not help either. for proof of the guitar playing thing just watch slash's video in gh3. _________________
