NetStormer, perhaps you would like to take my place as the DM since I got stuck trying to figure out how to show who is where in battle on IRC |

that'd be a big toughy... stumping me already... a possibility for everyone would be to get graph paper (every player included) and then devise a system of enemy placement, such as coordinates (orc 1 at B-9, goblin 1 at f-13, etc.) and then do the same for characters... make movements using the same system (John the Cleric moves from a-3 to b-6 attacks orc 2 with melee attack... etc.) If someone doesn't want to go and buy graph paper, then someone can make a page of it and make it available for printing.
EDIT: btw Matt... (since everyone else is doing it...) you walk into a room, it's dark, you feel a bit scared. Make a will save *you roll a 15* you failed your will save, you urinate all over yourself... you continue in. You see a dark figure, with a large sword. "Kneel," he commands you. You do so. He lifts his sword above his head. Make a will save *you roll a 20! Automatic pass* you do not shit yourself. He slices your head off, and you die 1d1 times. _________________

Well, what you could also do is have a random system of who gets hit in melee. Say...
Characters in melee have a 80% chance of 'choosing' to attack an enemy in melee, 20% chance of 'choosing' someone with ranged attacks/spell casters. However, those with ranged attacks have... a 60% chance of 'choosing' a melee character, 40% chance otherwise, to make up for the possibility of melee fighters being in the way. Spell casters can call shot on anyone.
This randomizes the battle pretty well, and while unrealistic in that you don't choose who you attack, it is realistic on the whole because it keeps weaker characters such as wizards and priests from being killed right away.
Let me know if I can clarify anything... I swear it does work. It's very useful when you don't have a grid or anything available, such as on a long bus trip _________________

but they're not on a long bus trip... and they will be sitting in front of computer screens. If they want actual terrain, then they'd kinda hafta do it like that, having each character keep track of where everything is.
DnD isn't about fairness... it's more about realism. The thing is that priests and wizards do get attacked, and tanks do want to attack. This randomization takes a bit of the fun out... _________________

You could have an constantly updating HTML page with the graph on it.
Also:
I make a ban attempt on everyone in this thread. Roll for a ban save. |
